Brother Poobah, I beg to differ. I think Jeff is trying to weasel out
altogether. He hasn't answered the question, he's just trying to buy
some time 'cause he doesn't have a clue what to answer, since he knows
that if he says he'd do, he'd have all the Skeptics on this list
asking him how he can say he has an objective morality and perpetrate
such an atrocity. See his next post.
POOBAH
What?? Skeptic disagreement? Splitter!
Well I agree that he is trying to weasel out of the question, and certainly
his response gives him room to argue he answered the question either way
later on ("I never admitted to any such thing. Show me where I said that."),
but I'm pretty sure I got the gist of this exchange:
JEFF (past)
Does God have good reason to ask this of me?
BAKKE (past)
He's "**GOD**". Isn't that reason enough?
JEFF (past)
You have spoken well, sir.
POOBAH
If we are to assume any sort of continuity for these statements, I'm not
sure what else they could mean, other than if God asks, that's reason enough
for Jeff. Of course, Jeff could clarify his position for us, but somehow I
don't think he will. As for his next message:
JEFF (past)
I don't know that I have a satisfactory answer to this one for you, sir,
except to say that if God exists, He will not stand before our judgment
seat. It is we who will stand before His.
POOBAH
I think this clearly shows he is more worried about being judged by Jehovah
than he is about acting in a fashion acceptable to the rest of society. He's
using the old "Who are we to judge God?" argument, but the implication here
is clear again, If Jehovah wants it, Jehovah gets it from Jeff, 'cause Jeffy
don't wanna burn. Whether it's right, humane or compassionate or not is
clearly secondary.
Nonetheless, given the ambiguity of his replies, Rev, I wouldn't be
surprised if I have misinterpreted them, since his goal is to avoid
answering the question.
Of course "Mr. Wisdom" could clear all of this up by actually answering the
question, satisfactorily or not, but I doubt he'll have guts enough to
actually stand up for his faith in all of its depravity.
