Subject: Date of Flood - Warning, Long mail.

To all searchers for the truth,

I have been trying to calculate the date of the flood, and I think I have,
but I would like my calculations to be open to critical scrutiny. The date
I get for the flood is 2325 BC. This is relevant to Biblical inerrancy, I
feel, because, if this date is correct, then it will be difficult to explain
why there is a continual record of occupation in Egypt/Mesopotamia /China
etc. covering this date. Here are the details. First I compiled a table of
peoples birth dates/death dates from Genesis. It is necessary to go beyond
Noah to get a date that is identifiable. In the back of my diary there is a
time-line which says that Abraham moved into Canaan c. 1900BC This is the
only date not taken from the Bible proper, but being in an appendix of the
Bible, it must be sanctioned by Them. Here is the list:

Name Age when Age Age Died Age of Universe
Firstborn Born lived After when born (AU)
Adam 130 800 930 0
 Seth 105 807 912 130

 *Age of Abraham

This is the main part of my argument, but it is the most shakey. I am
assuming that Abraham was not the first born of Terah's sons. If he was,
there are lots of other errors in the dates of Genesis. I am also assuming
he left Haran directly after Terah died.

Gen 12:4 - Abraham 75 when he left Haran
Acts 7:4 - He left Haran after Terah died
Gen 11:32 - Terah 205 when he died
So, Abraham was 75 when Terah died (if he left straight away). 205 - 75 =
130, so Terah was 130 when Abraham was born.
 Terah born in 1876 AU, so 1876 +130 = 2006 AU.

That is how I reached 2006 AU for his birth date. This means he left Haran
for Canaan in 2006 + 75 = 2081 AU

Now, using the date in the back of my book (Abraham entered Canaan in c.
1900BC), then 2081 AU = 1900 BC (all the following dates are circa).

Now that means the age of the universe is 1900 + 2081 = 3981 BC (only 23
years out from Bishop Usshers famous 4004 BC, so I am happy that my estimate is
this close).

This means to calculate any BC date from any AU date, all that is
necessary is to subtract the AU date from 3981.

 Now, back to Noah's flood:
Noah was born in 1056 AU.
Gen 7:11 - Flood started when Noah was 600
so Flood started 1656 AU.
This equates to 3981 - 1656 = 2325 BC!

I am sorry that this has been such a long mail, but being scientifically
inclined, I value Peer review to correct any errors that I have made.

Thank you for your patience, if any of you are interested in commenting I
will be able to read your replies on Thursday night, as that will be next
time I get a chance to read my mails.

Thanks again for your time, and for the interesting debates I have been
privileged to lurk around.

David F:
I got a value for the flood of about 2400 BCE a couple of years ago.
I usually round to 2500 BCE , at which time as you noted, humanity
was going about their business without regard to the supposed torrent
going on around and above them.
Of course, this problem will not affect any fundamentalist. They'll just invoke
the alleged errors of archeology and geology, the thousand-year long day
of YHWH, or whatever ad hoc idea they think will work.
