The authoritative (and excellent) work on the Canon of the NT is a
book of the same name by Bruce M. Metzger (1987). It is hard to get hold of
unless you are attached to a University Library or are prepared to pay
around US$40.

Excellent comments, as usual. I'd only add that the book by McDonald,
Formation of the Christian Canon, is what I'd consider to be an outstanding
piece of work on the subject. McDonald pays appropriate tribute to the work
of Metzger, but he is not bashful about parting company with him on issues
such as the Muratorian Canon. Another advantage is that McDonald covers the
OT as well as the NT. My recollection is that the book is less than US $20
in paperback. I highly recommend it for anyone interested in the topic.
