I am sorry for interjecting my comments, but I suppose if it is open
discussion, then anyone is allowed to comment, right?

Eugene:
I understand you Sheila (is it male or female name, sorry I am as Russian
would imagine that ending "-la" means that you are a female) and I think
many people on this list (even though I am new myself) would share that
experience, BUT don't stop searching for answers, if you stop and "rest" on
this e-mail list you may as possibly become thoughtless skeptic, I mean you
would change your Christian presuppositions for another set of
presuppositions
and you will not find any answer this way. I met some people (I don't know
your case) who were dissatisfied with Christianity, which then I realized
was not Christianity itself, but particular FORM of Christianity that they
were
dissatisfied with (like fundamentalism) - you were lied to, I mean if you
were said that bible is inerrant, so of course as soon as you realized that
it is not,
you wanted to leave those people...
SHEILA
>My reply: How does it make sense that a God of love and mercy would enjoy
>the dashing of babies against rocks, splitting pregnant women open, making
>people eat their own dung etc...... How can any of these actions be
>justifiable. If a parent made their child do these things, or performed
>these actions, they would be in jail.
Sorry to say, but as I told in other postings, IT DOES MAKE sense for me -
(1) we don't know anything about whether god enjoyed it or not, we don't
know anything about god, IF we think about Bible as one that HAS TO BE
either
inerrant OR errant
(2) I've read some ancient near east stories - there are blood and murders
there too, it does not always feels good to think about it, but person
killing babes and pregnant women (i.e. thinking of killing unborn babes, not
just women) was thinking about killing his ENEMIES, this was culturally
defined image - kill your enemy and his children, because they are part of
him. We live in INDIVIDUALISTIC culture and think about guilt in our
individualistic termins, that society was community-oriented, I don't want
to have detailed discussion here, I am trying to show that there is
explanation for those things you mentioned, but it gives us info only about
Jews and THEIR view of their god, not about GOD and HIS Jews. If you wanna
feel comfortable on this list, as I see it, you have to forget phrases like
"bible says..." or "bible reveals", we are talking about people who wrote
different parts of what then was called "bible"...
> I can't believe any explanation that would lead me to believe the bible
>is true. Denominations have different interpretations and how would I know
>who is telling the truth, assuming the bible to be true? If you are a
>christian and are going to try to get me back you can forget it because I
>won't believe anything you say.
SEE, that is what I am talking about - there were NO explanations, but
already deny them all and say you are not going to believe them, if you are
expecting to change your shaky Xtian point of view for stable skeptic - you
won't like it, because it is as shaky as Xtian, I know of only one stable
state of a human being, it is a dead state, as long as you live there won't
be any stability (I mean in thoughts, views and concepts, of course). The
reason, I believe some Xtians leave churches, is that they look for
stability that is promised to them and they don't find it, they realize they
were being lied to...
But welcome to this list and hope you enjoy it here as I enjoy it...
