Just the response I would expect from Matt. In reality, the "nonmember"
is clearly struggling with his/her faith, and is asking a perfectly
logical
question.
I would start by asking myself, is it possible for the "prayer" to have
been answered by any logical natural means..ie (natural event, outcome
already set in motion by other normal events...etc)?
For example, you pray for someone who is sick to be healed. They are
healed
by medical personnel. Or, they recover but the physicians are
surprised.
You must ask yourself, does science know all there is to know about
human
biology/physiology? The answer is...No! Just because science is at a
loss
to explain the recovery, doesn't make it a miracle by a long shot.
To claim any recovery is a "miracle" is to beg the question that medical
science has all the answers.
Another example: you pray to be promoted at work. Before your
promotion,
you begin working harder at your job. Just doing the best you can, and
maybe
a little extra. You get the promotion. Is it more likely you were
promoted
because of the prayer, or your outstanding performance at work?
And yes, as you noted above, it is hard to get past the evil committed
by the "God of Love". Your relationship with Yahweh is more like anyone
with an abusive lover. "You better love me, or I'll kill you"
(spiritually
of course, in the case of Yahweh).
