I have gotten in these kind of discussions with xians before. It seems like
god never gets around to curing anybody until the science and technology has
been developed. Amazing how that works!

Isn't it amazing? I haven't said much because I don't want to put any
negative expectations into Jason's head, but my wife recently had an
unexpectedly difficult delivery. As recently as twenty years ago my daughter
Maya probably wouldn't have made it, or at the very least would have had to
have been c-sectioned. One hundred years ago neither my wife or daughter may
have made it. My heartfelt thanks goes out to the doctors & nurses that
strove to save them both, and who watched over my daughter in the ICU day &
night. Thanks to them, and the thousands of medical professionals &
researchers who have gone before them, both my wife & daughter are home safe
& sound, and thriving.
Oh, and for the "no atheist in foxhole" crowd, never once during the entire
ordeal did I fall down on my knees, or did the thought even occur to me. I
imagine, though, that if Mephistopheles had appeared to me as I watched Maya
struggle with all her strength to breathe in that first day, and offered me
a bargain for her life, I would have jumped at the chance. Take from that
what you will.
My cousin also recently had a difficult labor, and once again, neither she
nor her son would have made it a hundred years ago. Her son also required a
week in the ICU. She & her husband are evangelical Christians, and their
birth announcement was full of thanks to God for allowing their son to
survive and the wonderful gift he had given them, but not a word of thanks
to the actual human beings who busted their butts to save mother & son's
lives.
It is for reasons like this that I hold those that pronounce "faith is
stronger than science" or some such garbage in utter contempt. In cases like
this, I consider "thanks to God" to show an utter lack of gratitude for the
people who were really responsible. If left to the design God had given us,
the vast majority of babies would still die within a year of birth, and
women would be lucky to survive their childbearing years.
Best of luck to you, Farrell, and hope all turns out for the best, and that
we'll soon hear your curmudgeonly voice of reason back here.
Good luck to you & your wife as well, Jason; you're about to be very
fortunate.
