Dear List memebers and especially the Inerrantists,
I am currently debating a Christian over the issue of whether John chapter
11 contains any evidence of what all Christians believe, namely that Lazarus
died twice.
I tried to show that because Jesus said "i am the resurrection" in the
context of raising lazarus to life again, that therefore this bringing back
Lazarus to life was "resurrection", and hence, immortality, and NOT merely
"rescusitation".
But this dude keeps talking about the burden of proof, saying that
i..."never proved that Lazarus never died again..."
Something is fishy here, since this is a negative proposition which he is
asking proof for.
I know the skeptics here will help me out, but would the Christians here on
this list please tell me what is wrong logically with saying
"But you never proved that Lazarus didn't die again..."?
I have been trying for the last two months to show this dude that his
specific assertion, that Lazarus died later on after this incident in John
11, is not protected or proved by asking me to prove the negative
proposition "lazarus never died again"
Instead, I find Hebrews 9:27 to be the reason why it is appointed unto man
to die once, and after this the judgement.
I think it is the Christian's responsibility to prove that Lazarus DID die
again, a request for positive evidence from the skeptics.
Please review our exchanges at
http://www.singlec.com/conversations/disc4_frm.htm
then post something there to show this Christian how silly it is to request
evidence to support a negative proposition.
The fallacy he committs is the "AD IGNORANTIAM" fallacey (the real name!),
but he doesn't seem to be too impressed.
I hope to see Matt's comments here as well.
Thanks,
