Seems to me that some confusion arises from people reading "Books of
Moses" and thinking that it means "Books *by* Moses" when it should
properly be interpreted "Books *about* Moses". The error is also
included in the famous movie, The Ten Commandments.
POOBAH
Let's see if I can apply what I learned from reading Mr. Burdette's
arguments in the genealogy "debate."
Even if we could find an original autograph with a title page that said
"Pentateuch by Moses" that wouldn't necessarily mean that the books were
authored by Moses.
You see, the word "by" has many meanings. In particular, we could say, "That
went right *by* him," in the sense of something being over someone's head,
or in other words meaning that the person in question couldn't comprehend
the statement made.
We have examples throughout our society testifying to this usage of the word
"by."
So therefore, it is clear that if we did have such a title page, what the
author truly intended by "Pentateuch by Moses" was that the Pentateuch went
right by him; in other words, Moses was really stupid, and couldn't
understand what was written therein.
In my defense, I will quote a book written by a colleague of mine in the
"old dead guys are ignorant" society, and if anyone points out that ancient
Jewish authors understood that the phrase was meant to indicate authorship,
I will denounce those ancient works, and claim that if my position was
unreasonable, then there should be modern scholarship countering it. When
asked for context for my claim, I will initially refuse to respond, but when
pressed will point out several incidents that show just how stupid Moses was
(like when he didn't notice that the 2nd set of 10 commandments Jehovah gave
weren't the same as the first set), clearly showing that my interpretation
must be correct. Further, I will denounce any methods of literary
interpretation as tools of the devil, and inappropriate for evaluating
scripture.
I will then loudly demand that someone showing me a work that shows that my
wacko interpretation couldn't possibly be.
After ignoring all questions & rebuttals, I will then unilaterally declare
victory, disappear, and show up again two & a half years later.
Did I miss anything?
