The questions:
2.) Did Peter a.) walk into the palace courtyard and sit down at the
fire or did he have to wait at the gate for "the other disciple" to
bring him in - and then go STAND at the fire?

And, to add to this, John states that "the other disciple" ,who was known
to the High Priest, accompanied Jesus at the questioning. So, why did
Peter chicken out? Plus, it states that the High Priest questioned Jesus
about his disciples. It's rather difficult to hide once your Leader
betrays you. Or, maybe that's why Peter betrayed him for retaliation.
