CREA Can't shed any immediate light on the subject of St. Bart's death, but I'm sure you can find bibliographic material appended to the article about him in the __Oxford Dictionary of Saints__ (OUP, 1998, 4th edition, ISBN 0-19-280058-2). There is, however, an apocryphal text titled __The Acts of Thomas__ which purports to relate this apostle's doings in India, including his martyrdom (by spear). It's verifiable that there are Christians in India (siuated in Kerala) who claim to trace their origins back to St. Tom (they're even known as "Mar Thoma Xians") but as one might suspect of a church founded by "Doubting Thomas", their orthodoxy, until the last century or two, has been less than pristine (Monophysite of the Syrian Orthodox variety, to be precise). It's a trifle disappointing to learn that the early Church found this (and the other apocryphal Acts of the apostles) to be so dangerously heretical that Pope Leo the Great not only banned their possession or use by the faithful, but also ordered one of those book-burnings for which the Church has become famous.
