BRIDEAN Well, if you have ever dealt with vector spaces in linear algebra they are defined by a bunch of formulas that they have to satisfy. But this gives them a "definition" which you can apply to prove theories. Similarly, if quantum mechanics were nothing but some formulas, they could also be as well defined as vector spaces. If not, why not?
