Roman records

This is a request for references or information directed to all you
knowledgeable infidels and others.

I have a recollection from many years back that I cannot confirm.  The
memory is that the Romans maintained good records of trials and the like,
and the lack of any reference to Jesus, his trial, etc. is one basis for
the conclusion that either he didn't exist, or wasn't tried as described in
the NT.  Someone has asked me where I got that from and I find that I don't
remember!

Am I remembering accurately that the Romans maintained such records?  If
so, could someone please point me to a web site, book or other resource
where I could read up on them?

Of course any related information would also be appreciated.
