It seems that human sacrifice was a worldwide practice in ancient societies.
The Bible itself referred to the practice of human sacrifices in biblical
lands and even spoke condemningly of those in the Israelite culture who
practiced it. We know from archaeological work that human sacrifices were
commonplace in the countries around Israel and in various other parts of the
world. The practice of human sacrifices in Aztec, Mayan, and Inca societies
in the "new world" has been confirmed by archaeologists. According to
Jacob's line of reasoning, we should conclude that the universality of human
sacrifices in ancient times is proof that "God" wants people to sacrifice
humans to him.
POOBAH
Well, Jehovah demanded a couple of human sacrifices that I know of in the
Old Testament (Isaac Gen22, Jephthah's daughter Judges11:30-39).
In addition to these specific cases, we have general commands such as Exodus
22:29, "the firstborn of thy sons shall thou give to me."
In Lev26:29 we read Jehovah threatening his people that if they don't do as
He says, He will cause them to, "Ye shall eat the flesh of your sons, and
the flesh of your daughters shall ye eat."
And then of course in Ezek20:26 Jehovah seems almost gleeful in speaking of
the ancient Hebrews, "I defiled them through their very gifts in making them
offer by fire all their first-born, that I might horrify them" (RSV) - well
He certainly horrifies me! (As a side note, in Ezek20:25 Jehovah says,
"Moreover I gave them statutes that were not good and ordinances by which
they could not have life" - couldn't it also be that he is so pissed at
modern Christians that the commands he has given them "are not good"? If
not, why not?)
Not to mention of course the wholesale slaughter of children instigated at
the behest of Jehovah. We can start with the Egyptian firstborn, next let's
move on to the Midianites (Num31), where at the command of God the
Israelites killed all of the male non-combatant children, and condemned the
girls to be sex slaves. Of course, Jehovah also got thirty-two little girls
for himself (Num31:40), we can only guess what happened to them.
Then of course there are the Amalkites (1Sam15) in which God demands the
slaughter of all of the infants.
Not to mention of course, the greatest human sacrifice ever told, where God
demanded the murder of Jesus to save all of humanity.
All-in-all, I think it is safe to say that child sacrifice is something that
Jehovah enjoys immensely, just like the smell of burning flesh from his
sacrifices.
