As for that "be your own god" crap: that's standard fare from fundies who
believe that if you reject YHWH, the Hebrew tribal god (small "g") then you
are by default your own god. As if!!!

Is belief in reincarnation even necessary to adhere to the philosophy of
Buddha?

I seem to remember a Buddhist parable in which one of the Buddha's disciples
(Ananda?) asks the Buddha if the gods exist. The Buddha replies that that
question is like a man wounded by an arrow demanding to know who shot the
arrow before allowing medical treatment.
