>>That is the difference between you and I Ron. I could never worship a
>>petty, murderous, butcher. Your statement makes me physically ill.
>>You rail against abortion, but you worship a God who murders babies.
>>Your faith is inconsistent, and sickening.
>>
>>Now Ron, I have one question, and I want an answer. If your God
>>manifested himself and ordered you to murder the "infant and suckling"
>>of his enemies as he did in 1 Samuel above, what would your answer be.
>>YES OR NO?

> Well, the Scriptures tell us to test the spirits. So if I had a vision
ACHILLES Indeed, it goes further than that. 1 Thess 5:21
>of God telling me to perform an action such as this I would first
>question the veracity of it. The primary problem, as I understand it, is
>that we are not living in the same context as the early Israelites. We
>are not surrounded by peoples who are trying to wipe us out, and I don't
>think we can conceive of our nation as God's "chosen" people. This sort
>of behavior is not consistent with God's methods in recent history. When
>God was preparing His chosen people within a particular historical
>context He considered such violence to be necessary. Since the time of
>Jesus' incarnation He has promoted reconciliation and brotherhood
>between peoples and has universalized His message and call to all people
>as predicted in the OT Scriptures.
> Based on the current context and the orientation of Scripture I would
>have to say no, I would not follow these instructions. I would also have
>to subject such a revelation to the scrutiny of the Church's teaching
>authority. I would question whether such a message was not of demonic
>origin since God usually works through His people, not individuals.
ACHILLES The difference in that time and ours do not seem so great as you make them sound, at least in the areas that are relevant. We have very many enemies all around and even amongst us who threaten us, and a great many people *do* believe that we are a "chosen people" though of course that delusion is hardly relevant in either case. Nonetheless, your answer to that question, in my opinion, shows some remnant of good sense. Indeed, such a command could not come from the greatest God, and thus the natural suspicion is of a demonic impersonator. For the very same reason, if one holds 1 samuel to be accurate, a demonic impersonator must be inferred there as well. "When dogma enters the brain, all intellectual activity ceases" -RAW
