Greetings my name is Gloria and a new member of this enlightening list.
In the discussion of creation of  adam (the word for man) the Bible
seems to suggest (Genesis  1:20--The man gave names to all the cattle,
all the birds of the air, and all the wild animals; but none proved to
be the suitable partner for the man.) that woman (who was given a proper
name--Eve) was made because the man/adam did not find adequate
companionship with all the animals.  And Eve was shown by the writer as
a subordinate character, that is the female sex.  And we hear so often
that the dog is man's best friend.  You just can't trust anything you
hear.
