Independent corroboration is a recognized method of historical
analysis. Since religious writings (of all kinds) are notorious for
making fantastic claims, it just isn't rational to accept such claims
without independent corroboration. It's a perfectly sensible critical
method.

independent, disinterested, contemporary corroboration of the
existence of this Jesus of Nazareth.
