This question was never raised until the 19th
century when a pack of Foolish Atheists
suggested it. The reactions of various Caesars
to the early Christians is well-documented, for
example, the edict of Claudius in 49. However,
the greatest independent, not disinterested but
adverse, contemporary corroboration is the
Talmud which says Jesus was "born the son of a
man called Panther, that his name was Yeshu,
that he worked magic, that he ridiculed the wise,
that he seduced and stirred up the people, that
he gathered five disciples about him, and that he
was hanged (crucified) on the eve of Passover".
It does NOT say that he did not exist.
