This is the problem with religion in general, and fundamentalism in
particular. As Bertrand Russell put it, "The fundamental defect of
Christian ethics consists in the fact that it labels certain classes of
acts 'sins' and others 'virtue' on grounds that have nothing to do with
their social consequences."
For Matt, anyone who does not hold his particular religious views is
necessarily a "bad tree," regardless of what "fruit" they produce.
Social activism be damned. All that matters is that you believe the
"right" way. This is why fundamentalist Christianity is so dangerous. It
does not have any concern for the human race as it relates to our
existence on earth. Energy is diverted from efforts to help human
beings in the here and now, to efforts to save souls for the unseen (and
possibly unreal) hereafter.
And then Christians want to know why unbelievers feel that
fundamentalist Christianity is dangerous. Who is it hurting, right?
But if it turns out that Christianity is false (as it is likely to be),
consider the implications of this wasted hereafter effort. Where money
could have been spent feeding the starving children of the world,
building shelters for the homeless, etc., instead it is given to
proselytize and focus on intangible (and unreal) needs. This truly is a
sad state of affiars and a complete pillage of human resources.
Now being a fundamentalist Christian once myself, I can predict the
response that I will receive. It will be to consider the flip side of the
coin: "For what doth it profit a man to gain the whole world, but lose his
own soul." In other words, it doesn't matter what you do for your fellow
human beings if you are going to burn in hell forever. However, does
anyone really think the Christian God is so cruel as to give his believers
this type of ultimatum? Damn the human condition or be damned
yourself?

Quick, what is the largest and most effective social service
organization in the world? That's right, the Catholic Church. Name an
atheist organization that comes even close. In fact name an atheist
charitable organization at all. So much for your "money better spent".
