RON First of all, Galilean fishermen and other Jews of that time (not to mention those of our time) were not "meek". Peter's ability to cut off an ear indicates great familiarity with the sword. He was not trying to split a skull. By disfiguring the messenger of the High Priest he was insulting the High Priest himself, who must be without blemish in order to fill his position.
