Isa 40:22 [It is] he that sitteth upon the circle of the earth, and the inhabitants thereof [are] as grasshoppers; that stretcheth out the heavens as a curtain, and spreadeth them out as a tent to dwell in. Contrary to most fundamentalist assertions, the Hebrew word here translated "circle" ("chuwg") does not connote a sphere. It is used in two other places in the Old Testament: Job 22:14 Thick clouds [are] a covering to him, that he seeth not; and he walketh in the circuit ("chuwg") of heaven. Pro 8:27 When he prepared the heavens, I [was] there: when he set a compass ("chuwg") upon the face of the depth: The word is derived from a root that means to circle about, or to surround. The root is translated "compassed" in the King James Version of Job 26:10. If Isaiah had intended to connote a sphere, he would have used the word "duwr", which is translated "ball" in the King James Version of Isaiah 22:18. Isaiah 22:18 He will surely violently turn and toss thee like a ball into a large country: there shalt thou die, and there the chariots of thy glory shall be the shame of thy lord's house. -Curt http://www.primenet.com/~heuvelc
