Actually, it can only take a few days for a legend to develop.
Don't believe me? Examine what is known and believed about the American
"Wild West."
What *exactly* happened at the OK Corral? Was Wyatt Earp a really good guy
or a thug with a badge? Who ws Billy the Kidd - how did he die and how many
men did he kill?
You see, legends develop very quickly - and *that* was at a more "modern"
time with "modern" press and communication equipment. Living people existed
who could refute the lies (and did - Earp's wife spent her life refuting
stories about her husband, but to no avail). How much easier is it for a
legend or myth to develop in ancient days?
