[snip digression]

> I digress. Here is the point:

> During the sermon, the "pastor" was mentioning how Jesus saved us
from the old law (debatable). He said that the OT claims it is OK to beat your wife with a stick AS LONG AS IT WAS NO LARGER IN DIAMETER THAN YOUR THUMB! OK, that is a new one on me. I tried to find the reference, but had no luck. Does anyone have any idea where this thumb thing came from? Or is it just another typical example of Christian lies and deception?

BRYCE I'm pretty sure it isn't in the Old Testament. Usually, it is claimed that this rule came out of British common law, and that the rule is the source of the phrase "rule of thumb." But I've read some things that indicated that no such rule existed there, either. Best I can tell, it seems to be a sort of urban myth or rumor. If you're really interested, I might be able to find my sources again. == Bryce Anderson http://members.tripod.com/~Idafab/index.html Thus spake Nostradamus: "Two nations shall go to war.
