I was unaware of your harmonization, as I'd only been on the list
for a few days when I posted mine. I will admit that yours is every
bit as plausible as mine. However, I've been researching another
harmonization which I feel to be far superior.
The basis of the entire argument rests on the word "headlong."
As can be seen, this enigmatic parcel of english is actually two words
smooshed together. The first word, "head," and the second word,
"long." Once we realize that these are two separate words, the entire
"contradiction" disappears in a blinding flash of logic.
It wouldn't have taken long after Judas's death for his body to
begin decaying. As we all know, decay weakens the tissues of the body
(especially when the entire weight of a grown man is being supported
by a relatively thin strand of rope). Eventually, the head would
separate from the rest of the body. Assuming that Judas was hung from
the branch of a tree, the bough would be exerting an upward force
equal to gravity's downward force on his entire(ly deceased) corpse.
When his body dropped like a sack of potatoes, the bough would still
be exhibiting the same upward force, but now the action of gravity on
the head would not be enough to balance that force. In short, Judas's
head would have shot into the sky like a bottle rocket (This also
provides a naturalistic explanation for the rending of the veil in the
temple. Think of the veil as a piece of toilet paper, the tree as a
giant slingshot, and draw your own conclusions). So, as we see,
Judas's HEAD took a LONG time to hit the ground!
I believe the original Greek supports my conclusions.
