Sexually repressive social mores seem to be connected to this sort of
phenomenon. Priests aren't allowed to have 'normal' relations. So they
turn to such deviant behavior as an alternative. I think also that the
priesthood is a refuge for those that are 'confused' about their sexual
identity.
If sex was treated as a normal, healthy biological function instead of
something dirty or abnormal, I think that we would have less problem
with such deviant behavior.
