Now that's a toughie! I guess there are several ways to look at it.
Perhaps diseases such as cancer are a way of getting us to return to
him. I know I get really "religious" when I have problems. Like in
between jobs I pray like crazy. Another take on the problem is that due
to sin the world has gotten out of whack, diseases are a product of
rebellion against God. Malaria, would probably be the result of humans
living in climates that are too hot and damp. Anyway, we all die as a
result of some disease or health problem. And schizophrenia , depending
on its source, could be the result of a weak mind, a chemical imbalance,
or some environmental influence of some sort.
Ultimately the Catholoc church's position is that God did not intend
death to be a part of man's existence. As the Catholic Catechism says,
""God did not make death, and He does not delight in the death of the
living....It was through the devil's envy that death entered the world"
(Wis 1:13;2:24)" (Catechism #413)
So, in a way, through sin human beings have chosen death. But it is
not an irreversable fact. By choosing to serve God and repenting for sin
and accepting Christ's sacrifice we can have the possibility of an
eternal life perhaps not even attainable by our ancestors before the
Fall?
