Which bible are you using now that you threw out the AV? I don't find the words "original sin" in my translation of the gospels. What we've got here is 1. If the doctrine of original sin is true, then the for/against contradiction fails 2. The doctrine of original sin is true 3. Therefore, the for/against contradiction fails. Matt has not really supported 1, because he's done nothing to show that the text really pertains to a state of sin-at-birth, rather than the opinion/political attitude that one gets from a surface reading of the text. He hasn't suppored 2 at all, and since it works well for my case I'll side with Lenny on this that the bible does not teach the doctrine of original sin. With serious doubts in Matt's premises, I don't see much of a reason to accept the conclusion. Matt, where does the bible teach "original sin"? In what way does the text (especially Mark 9) speak about this doctrine and not about the status of those who use Jesus' name but don't follow the exact teachings of Jesus? Before you have supported your two premises, there's no reason for anyone to accept your conclusion. Just to drive the absurdity home, will you accept this argument for biblical inerrancy: 1. If the sky is orange on every July 32, then the bible is inerrant. 2. The sky is orange on every July 32. 3. Therefore, the bible is inerrant. I should hope not, because the premises are obviously false. If I wanted to argue from the basis of these statements I'd have to show you that there was a good reason to believe these statements (I happen to believe that there's not, but that's another story) and until then you'd be perfectly justified to ignore me as a crazy.
