Based on the recommendations of some on this list, I checked out "Demon
Haunted World" from the public library. In it, I found this quote which
I may have tattooed on myself.
"It is morally as bad not to care whether a thing is true or not, so
long as it makes you feel good, as it is not to care how you got your
money, so long as you have got it."
For myself, this explains comments of folks--Lenny most recently--who
say that one shouldn't read the bible looking for contradictions. Some
of us *cannot* accept it unless we can examine it under a bright light,
and find it to be true. Why not crawl through it with a microscope? If
I am trying to determine whether or not a dish on my counter is clean
(hey, I'm a bachelor), I *look for* stuff on the plate, and only if I
don't find any do I conclude that the plate is clean. In the same way,
because I want to know if the bible is true, I look for place where it
might be incorrect. If I find them, then the bible contains incorrect
assertions, and at least partially wrong.
Would any inerrantist care to tell me why they think this is a wrong
approach?
peace,
john
