A day in the creation of... (Yoel?)

As I recall, this has been discussed earlier. I tried searching the archives
with no luck (checking out the "Day = epoch" and "Day.." threads), so I ask
you all (if you have the relevant posts), and especially Yoel:

Could the word translated as "day" in the creation story also mean "period
of time"? Is the same word used in other places, and does the context
suggest different meanings in the different places? Can the text at all be
read like this:

"In the first period of time, God created.."

"And on the seventh DAY, you shall rest.."

?

Yes, I have met another of those wonderful theology students claiming
knowledge of Hebrew.
