What Happened before the Big Bang?

I did ask Dr. Odenwald about Stephen Hawking's imaginary time, 
here is what he says. Dr. Odenwald, by the way, has a Ph.D in 
astronomy.

Stephen was speaking of 'imaginary time' which is NOT our familiar time,
but is actually a space-like dimension which we would 'exprience' as 
timeless in the usual sense. In other words, we are both correct.

Astronomers and physicists use words in very specific and careful ways.
This always confuses the non-specialist.
