Dear Doug:
I am aware of the Concordat. I think that John Cooney mentioned it in
_The American Pope_, his biography of Francis Cardinal Spellman.
Spellman owed his career to Pope Pius XII.
But don't forget that this Concordat was signed in 1933, before most
people knew what a threat that Hitler was. Most heads of state did not
realize how bad Hitler was until it was too late, and World War II was
underway in 1939. It seems to me that people are singling out the RC
Church for what it did (or did not do) to help Hitler, when many secular
governments are just as (or more) guilty.
I did say before that I believe the Vatican did not do enough. I just
object to the exaggeration of the role of the Roman Catholic Church in
Hitler's career. What about the Nazi-Soviet non-aggression pact, signed
by Hitler and Stalin, which supplied Hitler's war machine and freed him
from worrying about the eastern front for a while? I think that that was
a lot more important (and closer to WWII) than the Concordat.
The past must be examined, but it should not be distorted. I think that
singling out the RC Church for blame is a distortion of the past.
