FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - 11/6/97

	--- MEDIA ADVISORY - NEWS CONFERENCE ---

INTERFAITH GROUPS CONDEMN ANTI-MUSLIM REMARKS BY CHRISTIAN COALITION
LEADER
Intolerant statements come as White House holds conference on hate

WHAT: On Friday, November 7, the Council on American-Islamic Relations
(CAIR), along with other national and local Islamic and interfaith
organizations,* will hold a news conference to demand an apology from
Christian Coalition founder Pat Robertson for a recent televised attack
on the Islamic faith.

According to transcripts of the October 27th Christian Broadcasting
Network "700 Club" program, Robertson said: "To see Americans become
followers of, quote, Islam, is nothing short of insanity...Why would
people in America want to embrace the religion of the slavers...You say
'what's going on in America, when we welcome into our society and give
rights to people who are persecuting Christians around the world.'"
(VHS tapes of the remarks will be available at the news conference.)

"It is ironic that Mr. Robertson made these hate-filled comments just
as President Clinton is preparing to host a White House conference on
hate crimes. It is just such intolerant remarks that create an
atmosphere in which bias crimes may flourish," said CAIR Executive
Director Nihad Awad. (The White House Conference on Hate Crimes will be
held on Monday, November 10.)

News conference participants will also call on elected
representatives and religious leaders to repudiate
Robertson's remarks.

WHEN: Friday, November 7, Noon (Eastern)

WHERE: National Press Club, West Room
		13th Floor, National Press Building
              14th and F Streets, N.W.
		Washington, D.C.

CONTACT:	Call CAIR at 202-659-CAIR (2247).

				- END -

* Groups scheduled to attend the news conference include
CAIR, The Interfaith Alliance, American Muslim Council,
Masjid Muhammad, the Muslim Student Association of USA and
Canada, the Interfaith Conference of Metropolitan
Washington, Islamic Chaplaincy of Howard University, and
North American Council for Muslim Women.

PAT ROBERTSON IN HIS OWN WORDS

"When I said during my presidential bid that I would only
bring Christians and Jews into the government, I hit a
firestorm. `What do you mean?' the media challenged me.
`You're not going to bring atheists into the government? How
dare you maintain that those who believe in the
Judeo-Christian values are better qualified to govern
America than Hindus and Muslims?' My simple answer is, `Yes,
they are.'"

- From Pat Robertson's book "The New World Order," page 218.

(Article VI, Section 3 of the U.S. Constitution: "no
religious test shall ever be required as a qualification to
any office or public trust under the United States.")

The 700 Club, 6/13/91
Conversation responding to a Muslim prayer in Congress:
Co-host Sheila Walsh: "Oh boy. So where does it stop."
Robertson: "It doesn't Sheila. You'll have Hindus up there
now. Baha'i."
Walsh: "Do we have white witches opening in prayer?"
Robertson: "Undoubtedly. You'll have all kinds of weirdness.
This is the opening gun..."

The 700 Club, 7/22/94
"The truth is that the Dome of the Rock was built on the
site of a Christian church. The Christian church was torn
down to build that thing, and to make that, quote, the third
most holy sight is a bit of a stretch of history. But
there's a great deal of stretching history in the Muslim
psyche."

---

The 700 Club, 10/20/94
"There is tremendous fatalism in Islam, that in a sense
Allah set things up and let them go. And the whole concept
of Kismet or fate or it's the will of Allah...You've got
flies in your face, it's the will of Allah. A child is
hungry, it's the will of Allah..."

---

The 700 Club, 2/4/94
"I made a statement a long time ago that if in a high office
that I would appoint to a cabinet position only Christians
and Jews...Well, the truth is we've never had a Muslim in a
high position of appointment in the history of America. But
everybody says to be politically correct, these Muslims are
wonderfully (sic) people..."

---

The 700 Club, 4/6/95
"Islam in truth is a Christian heresy. Mohammed had been
deeply taught in Christianity and Judaism, and he sort of
mixed some of it up."
