"Virgin Birth" (to David Court)

David-
I don't know what "virgin birth" meant exactly to the Hebrews - maybe Yoel
or someone else reading can clarify it for us.

yoel- The concept doesn't exist. What's the purpose for it? I think that
orthodox Jews have a much more healthy attitude towards sex than most
Christians I have met. (Still screwed up, though- in my humble opinion.)
What is the purpose of a virgin birth? God created sex! There is nothing
"evil" about sex (as long as it's performed within God's perimeters)! The
entire Song of Songs is based on sex! What is it in the act of sex which is
so detrimental to human character and developement and would make it
necessary for the messiah to be concieved in chastity?

Also, apart from religion, whose claim to virgin impregnation would you
accept? Let's say your 18 year old neighbour is pregnant and when asked who
the father is, claims that there is no father (never mind that the father
is God). She is going to give a virgin birth. Would you believe her? Maybe
she is telling the truth! There is really no way for you to verify this.
But wouldn't you meet her claim with some degree of skepticism? What would
this girl have to do or say to make you believe?

And please don't say: "Well, if she were to give birth to a man of
impeccable morality...." Well, there are lots of sincere Christians who do
not believe in the virgin birth. Also, there are lots of moral people who
have never heard of Christianity. And finally, to some people, it has yet
to be proven that Jesus was indeed a person of integrity. Personally, I
just don't see it! You may doubt this... but I wish I could! So many people
believe in Jesus and pattern their lives according to his example... I
would like to see that people would choose a reputable example. Instead,
what I see discourages me as to the nature of human socialization and
motives.

David
>Finally, another question: who ever said that Joseph never "exercised his
>marital rights (I assume you mean had sex) when they were wed"? I, for one,
>have never met or read anyone who believes that he didn't.

yoel- Pardon me if I am wrong, but don't Catholics believe that Mary was an
eternal virgin? Doesn't this sort of imply a lack of sex with Joseph?

Hello Dave! Don't believe what you read... I am not a monster!
