(DAVE 6/25) Hello everyone: To follow up on a thread last week, and for
anyone interested, I got hold of the following two statements concerning the
Salvation Army. The first is its "Mission Statement", the second is a brief
history/description of it. They are as follows:

Mission Statement
"The Salvation Army, as an international Movement, is an evangelical branch
of the Christian Church. ITS MESSAGE is based on the Bible; ITS MINISTRY is
motivated by love for God and a practical concern for the needs of humanity.
ITS MISSION is to preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ, supply basic human
needs, provide personal counselling, and undertake the spiritual and moral
regeneration and physical rehabilitation of all persons in need who come
within its sphere of influence regardless of race, color, creed, sex or age."

Basic Description
"The Salvation Army is an international religious and charitable movement
presently working in over 100 countries. It is part of the worldwide
Christian Church and is organized and operated on a quasi-military style.
Its members include ordained officers (clergy), soldiers and adherents
(laity), and thousands of others who participate in various youth and senior
Army-sponsored groups and programs.
The Salvation Army was founded in England in 1865 by william Booth, a
Methodist minister who was further called by God to become an independent
evangelist and take the Gospel and practical Christianity to those in the
slums of London's East End.
The Salvation Army came to Canada in 1882 when two British immigrant
teenagers, Jack Addie and Joe Ludgate, began holding impromptu meetings in
London, Ontario. In 1896, a Canadian woman officer, Lutie DesBrisay, began
the Army's work in Bermuda.
The Army's motto: "Heart to God and Hand to Man," is a restatement of the
great command in the Bible that says we should love God and love others as
ourselves. This love for God and mankind moves Salvationsists to: preach
the gospel, teach Christian truths, provide human services to all in need."

regards.

Dave.
