"Evil" in Isa. 45:7

MATTHEW
As you can see, KJV has evil in it, translated as "evil" for Hebrew "rah"
which is a correct translation in many other parts of the Bible for "rah."
Yet, the NAS translates it as "calamity," and I tend to consider the NAS as
the most literal of the modern translations (not including literal
translations, which are not composed for regular reading).

TILL
If you want a literal translation, then check *Young's Literal Translation
of the Bible.* He translates the word "evil" in Isaiah 45:7. Hendrickson's
interlinear Bible is a literal translation, and it also uses "evil" to
translate "rah" in this passage.

The modern translations like the NAS, NIV, RSV, etc. have sacrificed
scholarship many times in order to remove errors. Second Chronicles 22:2 in
the NIV is a good example. The Masoretic text of this verse clearly says
that Ahaziah was 42 when he began to reign as king, but this conflicts with
2 Kings 8:26, which states that Ahaziah was 22 when he began to reign as
king. As a matter of fact, the wording in Hebrew is exactly the same in
both texts except that 2 Chronicles 22:2 used the number 42 rather than 22
for Ahaziah's age. The NIV solved the problem. It put 22 for Ahaziah's age
in 2 Chronicles 22:2 despite how the Hebrew text reads. Hence, just like
that, a contradiction is gone.

And guess what? The NAS, which Matthew says is the "most literal of the modern
translations, also ignored the Hebrew text and put 22 for Ahaziah's age in 2
Chronicles 22:2. Maybe Matthew can explain to us why a translation that
does such as this should be considered the most literal of the modern
translations.

Here is a word of caution to everyone on the list. Use the recent
translations of the Bible--I do--but use them carefully and check them for
accuracy. They were published after several inconsistencies had been highly
publicized, and some of them have tried to translate away inconsistencies.
