3 days and 3 nights

Perhaps some inerrantist can explain the "diffuculty" presented by
Matthew 12:40 and other passages in the NT that reveal Jesus was
crucified and buried on the preparation day (i.e. the day before the
sabbath) and already risen early morning on the first day of the week
(Sunday).
Lets face it, three days and three nights cannot fit between late
Friday afternoon and Sunday morning.
Some inerrantists claim a Wednesday crucifixion, others a Thursday
crucifixion, and the majority hold to the traditional Friday
crucifixion.
Further, some passages claim Jesus would be killed and rise from
the dead on "the third day" while others say "after three days". Which
do you believe is correct, and if so, why?
