A Failed Prophecy

The postings today have shown perhaps a slight shift in the direction of
inerrancy discussions, so to help this trend, I will post an example of a
failed prophecy and wait for Walt, Dave, Aubrey, Jerry, Michael (Hughes), or
any other inerrantist on the list to try to show that the prophecy did not fail.

In 2 Samuel 7:12-16, the prophet Nathan spoke to David a prophecy of an
everlasting kingdom that would secure the throne of David forever: "When
your days are fulfilled and you sleep with your fathers, I will set up your
seed after you that shall proceed out of your loins, and I will establish
his kingdom. He shall build a house for my name, and I will establish the
throne of his kingdom forever. I will be his father, and he will be my son.
If he commit iniquity, I will chasten him with the rod of men, and with the
stripes of the children of men, but my lovingkindness will not depart from
him, as I took it from Saul, whom I put away before you. And your house and
your kingdom will be made sure FOREVER before you; your throne will be
established FOREVER."

This prophecy is an excellent example of Hebrew ethnocentricity, spoken by
someone who obviously throught that his god Yahweh was the supreme god and
that he so loved the Hebrew people that he would secure their kingdom
through the lineage of David and make it last forever. Needless to say,
this did not happened. Nebuchadnezzar destroyed Jerusalem in about 987 B. C.
blinded Zedekiah, the king of Judah and took him bound to Babylon (2 Sam.
25:6). Zedekiah was the last descendant of David to sit on the throne of
Judah, so the past 2,984 years are a monument to the failure of this key
prophecy.

Other inerrantists may have different explanations, but I know what Jerry
McDonald and Michael Hughes will say in response to this. I will let them
say it first and then respond.
