            AN ATHEIST'S PRAYER
                 Samuel Chasinov

I wish there were a God.
An all powerful God.
A kind and loving God.

My God would have no temples or cathedrals, no mosques or meeting
houses.
He would have no priests or ministers,
no rabbis or imams or other holy men
to speak for him.
He would have no holy books to keep
his words, for he would live in the
hearts and minds of all alike.
He would need no praise or prayers.

There would be no wars,
No holocausts or inquisitions.
There would be no religions or infidels,
No fanatics who slaughter in the name
of righteousness.
The nations and races of the world
would live in peace and harmony.

A kind and loving God would not allow
the genital mutilation of young girls,
or the abuse of children. There would
be no rape.
Women would not be treated as unclean,
or second class citizens.
They would walk hand in hand with men,
Different but equal in a natural symbiosis.

On my God's earth there would be no
floods or earthquakes, no typhoons or
tornadoes to wreak havoc on mankind.
There would be no droughts or famines,
no children with hunger swollen bellies,
or mothers with empty breasts for their
suckling babes.

Children would not bear children, and
babies would be born only to mature
and loving parents.
A child would be safe at home and in
the streets, and laugh and play and go
to school without fear.

There would be no pain or suffering or
disease and when people have lived
their allotted time they would die
peacefully in their sleep.

I wish there were a God.
An all powerful God.
A kind and loving God.

I wish.
