Geez, who'da thunk one asinine post of mine would have
triggered so many off-topic responses? :-) I've already had
enough of this grammatical silliness as it really isn't
worth bickering about, but I'd like to respond to my critics
before I put this to rest. Till's right about the difference
between standard English and so-called "correct English", and
I agree 110% that to have no respect for standard English is
more often than not tantamount to losing the respect and/or
understanding of the intended audience. I hadn't noticed,
as Nancy pointed out, that this thread started as a reply to
Adnan's grammer question, so I feel a little silly for letting
loose this can of worms with my rants against the concept of
"correct English". Of course, it was also interesting
to learn that I am "a little inadequate because a couple our
posters whose native tongues are not English have a better
command of the English language than you." :-) For the record
Nancy, I'm not that petty; and furthermore although you probably
can't tell it from some of my posts, I am actually a fairly
competent writer.
Besides these two points, there really isn't much else
in this off-topic thread I can dignify with a response,
except for the fact that I STILL think smilies rule :-)
(at least in informal email at least), and that maybe we all
should lighten up a bit, and quit castigating each other
for the silly mistakes we all make.
