did not stray from all that God commanded him all the days of his life,
except in the case of Uriah the Hitite."

The "had"s can be added, to make it sound more fluid in English (David HAD
done, he HAD not strayed, God HAD commanded him), but they do not exist in
Hebrew, because that tense does not exist in Hebrew. The past was
considered to be the past- and there are no subtle variations of action in
the past.
