Here, Walt uses a "appeal to authority" to prop up a claim.
I don't know what percentage of scientists believe in God,
even if it was a large proportion, this would not be proof
of those beliefs.

Implicit in your statement is the idea that because some scientists
believe in God, there must be some evidence for God. That is not
necessarily true. Scientists are human beings, and while
in their professional lives they will believe something
based on evidence, that does not mean that evidence based belief
extends to their personal or "spiritual" lives.
