Helen:
I have a few easy questions, Walt, but you will probably duck them as
you do most. 1) Did you read Yoel's post? 2)What do your sources translate
the name Barabbas to mean? 3)Do you disagree will the author of the post's
claim that many of the early copies of the gospels list Barrabbas's first
name as Jesus? 4) What is your explanation of why both men offer to the crowd
seem to be the same man?
yoel-
bar abba is a compound structure, common to Hebrew and Aramaic.
bar (Aramaic for son, like in bar mitzvah [son of the commandment])
abba (no, not the 70's swedish pop sensation, but "father" in Aramaic)
Bar abba- son of the father
Helen:
I have never seen any other explanation. I think that all sources, also,
agree that Barabbas's first name was Jesus. I just have never heard a
Christian explanation of why the crowd was offer a choice of two men who seem
to have been the same man. Also, why was a thief called "son of the father"?
Yoel's great Tammy Faye quote:
I take Him shopping with me.
I say: "Jesus! Help me find a bargain!"
Tammy Faye Bakker
Helen:
Has anyone ever made Christianity so banal as Tammy Faye? Jesus saves, almost
as much money as coupon clipping. Whatta bargain!
