Though radiocarbon tests in 1988 suggested the shroud was no more than
700 years old, researchers have reached no consensus on how the image
was created. The Roman Catholic Church has never claimed the cloth as a
holy relic.

CARR
The Shroud has been in another fire many years ago. It is claimed that
this fire fooled the carbon-dating method by making the Shroud look
younger than it really is. Now that it has been in another fire, it
should look even younger. It gained 1300 years in the last fire, so it
should now look like a brand new piece of cloth :-)
