The flavor of christianity I subscribed to also accepted the prophetic writings as having been mostly fulfilled. We went through great pains to explain how the book of revelation was making reference to events that were occuring, using 'coded' words (i.e., babylon for rome) so that the book would not be supressed. However, when it comes down to it, the most impressive of the end times prophecies, where heaven and earth are destroyed by fire, and a "new heaven and a new earth" are to be created, have failed quite dramatically. It seems that from the very beginning, christianity has failed in it's prophecies. Jesus did not fulfill the requirements of the messiah (he did not overthrow the roman government and start a jewish kingdom), though christians continue to claim that he was the messiah. Jesus didn't spend 3 days in the earth, he spent 2, as far as I can tell. "When I am lifted up I will draw all men to me"-> yet another failed prophecy as there has been no time that I am aware of, where the majority of humans in existence were professing christians. Certainly there has never been a time when *all* human beings have been professing christians.

Among evangelicals, there is the belief that once everyone has gotten a chance to hear the gospel, then jesus will come back for round 2. According to paul however, this supposedly happened millenia ago; the gospel had been supposedly preached to every creature under heaven (I wonder how koala bears reacted to the greek speaking gospel preachers?) in his time, yet jesus still remains hidden.

I think it's about time for christians to be realistic on this one; jesus died, if he ever lived, and isn't coming back.
